What to Expect

The first day of class provides so many new experiences for your child - new faces, new environment, new activities, new teacher, new sounds, and the list goes on.  It can be overwhelming, but take heart, Kindermusik is the leader in movement and music classes for young children for a reason - WE KNOW KIDS!

Before Class

Arrive 10 - 15 minutes early to take care of personal needs, help your child feel comfortable in the new environment, and make a new friend.

Go barefoot together - "Walking barefoot.....develops the muscles and ligaments of the foot, increases the strength of the foot's arch, improves proprioception (our awareness of where we are in relation to the space around us) and contributes to good posture". Why Barefoot is Best for Children, Tracy Burne, Podiatrist

The Room

The room is set up with minimal distractions, and each activity is developmentally appropriate for your child.  Most children are cautious and stay close to their grown up on day one, but some activities draw them out.  They are looking to YOU on how to react to this new experience.  If they see you having fun and engaging in each activity, they'll soon follow.

Explore the instruments/props together with your child during Gathering Time.  Try to narrate, validate, and imitate what your child is doing to help build their confidence in their choices.  Children love to be "the leader" and be noticed.  Avoid saying "Good job!" at every move they make.  Instead, use the process of scaffolding as they explore instruments. "I see how you can shake your maracas fast. Can you also shake them slowly?" Or, "I like how you are swishing your sand blocks back and forth".

The Class

Each week in class you can expect a similar routine of activities, but varying props, songs and instruments.  This predictability gives children the security they need to explore, learn and grow.  With each week, children grow more and more accustomed to our "Hello Song", circle dances, lap bounces, etc.  They begin to embrace it on their own.  They often even begin to initiate the activities as they become familiar with the routine.  It's really an amazing experience to watch them learn and grow!
